Confidentiality
All interactions between clients and counsellors at easyCounselling are confidential. No client information will be shared with any third party, including family members or other professionals, without the client’s prior consent. Client records are kept in a locked filing cabinet and a locked room. In accordance with Canadian law and professional ethical standards, client/counsellor confidentiality is limited by the following circumstances:
- reported suspected child abuse or neglect
- imminent self-harm or danger to another person(s) or society
- subpoena or court order
Otherwise, client information is confidential and it will not be shared with anyone.
Internet Confidentiality Online easyCounselling services over e-mail or instant messaging are conducted using encryption-based, SSL (secure socket layer) software systems to ensure a high level of security and confidentiality for counselling transactions. This is a similar level of security offered by banks for online banking. However, easyCounselling cannot guarantee that these internet systems are error free, or that they are not susceptible to intrusion, attack or computer virus infection.
If a client chooses to use standard (insecure) e-mail or instant messaging systems, then the counsellor will reply with a similar e-mail or messaging system, and the client assumes full responsibility for this lower level of security. Clients assume full responsibility for the confidentiality of information stored within or left on the screen of their personal or workplace computers. Clients should be aware that some employers use internal monitoring software to monitor employee computer files.
